 Pros and Cons of Having a Birdbath in Your Yard
Birds are a wonderful part of the outdoors and their songs provide a calming soundtrack for a day of gardening, sunbathing, or yard work. The sight of them sitting on tree branches, fences, and rooftops can be delightful to bird lovers. As flocks of them take to the skies, life can seem peaceful and all can seem right with the world. Nature is a beautiful thing.
As birds visit your yard, especially to use your birdbath, there are some problems of which you should be aware. A birdbath makes bird watching a delight, but there are pros and cons to having one in your yard. Here's a list of pros and cons to help you; just remember that if things get out of hand, an experienced pest control company can help.
Pros
- Birds are fun to watch. They come in beautiful, colorful varieties and their individual songs can lighten the heart and enhance the outdoor experience.
- Birdbaths teach you about the unique and wonderful habits of birds and introduce you to their varieties. Bird watching is a hobby enjoyed by many around the world, and a birdbath might be a great introduction to this interesting hobby.
- Birdbaths can be instrumental in helping to control insects that threaten the fruits and vegetables in your garden. Many birds eat bugs, and some beneficial insects that your birdbath will attract eat other harmful bugs.
- The birds that visit your yard will engage in activities such as hunting insects and worms and eating plant parts that will help aerate the soil in your yard.
Cons
- Sometimes birdbaths attract too many birds and they can become a nuisance.
- It can take a while before birds begin to drink from your birdbath and before this happens, they can populate your yard for a time. Then, they'll build nests, sometimes in high, hard-to-reach places, and this can become a problem.
- If the water in a birdbath is not cleaned regularly--which can happen--algae, mold, bacteria, and mosquitoes can appear because of stagnating water.
- Bird feathers and their droppings can accumulate in the basin of your birdbath and cause a filthy mess.
Now, whether or not you decide to keep, get rid of, or buy a birdbath, you'll be familiar with the challenges and delights associated with these winged creatures as they visit your home. As previously mentioned, there are companies that can help you control bird problems when they arise.
